In Memory

Magnificent and noble head
Once held so proud, hangs low instead
The coiled steels that stood him tall
Have no bounce left in them at all
But quiver gently 'neath his weight
Protesting each slight moving grate
The tail arched proudly o'er his back
Took too much effort - it lies slack
And oh, those glorious spark-filled eyes
Are dull, confused; they question why
Such fierce pain came so soon in life
To snuff the joy and cause such strife
And as I held that sweet proud head
I wondered, too, but naught I said
Just met his eyes with mine instead
Praying that he could somehow know
The depths of which I loved him so
In loving him I set him free
To die in peace and dignity
To never feel the pain again
